teaching vocabulary

The Expanding Learners’ Vocabulary course explores the role of vocabulary in language learning and looks at approaches to teaching vocabulary effectively. It looks into the theory of vocabulary learning and acquisition and considers some of the research into this area. The course also provides teachers with lots of practical ideas for helping learning learners to expand their vocabulary repertoire.

The aim of this course is to help teachers:

  • plan and deliver principled lessons for teaching vocabulary.
  • understand the cognitive processes at work in learning new words, and develop a programme of strategy training for vocabulary learning.
  • select materials and design activities which are fun and motivating for students.
  • become familiar with a variety of online tools for exploring words inside and outside the classroom.

Student Reviews

The instructors were experts who explained the concept with easy to understand videos, presentations and clear instructions. The course was very interesting and comprehensive. I have already implemented some of the things learnt in this course. I highly recommend it. Thank you!

These courses, held by wonderful training experts, have been the perfect balance between theory and practice with the trainees performing in the workshop as both teachers and students… Our teachers’ and students’ feedback about the course was enthusiastic and we owe this great result to the high professionalism of the teacher trainers from ATC.

Course content

The Expanding Learners’ Vocabulary course explores what is means to really know a word. There are various kinds of word knowledge necessary to master a word completely, including knowledge of how it is written and pronounced, its meaning, grammatical behaviour, associations, collocations, frequency and register. On this course teachers will consider how all this knowledge is acquired. We look at how teachers can help learners process new words in order to integrate them into their existing vocabularies, remember them and retrieve them with ease.

Teachers will look at some of the research into vocabulary learning and discuss a variety of strategies that learners might use to help them learn new words. Teachers will also look at instructional ideas, techniques and activities for vocabulary teaching and strategy development, in secondary level and adult learners.

Course Modules:

  • What’s in a word? Examining word features and exploring what makes a word difficult or easy
  • Trends and techniques in vocabulary teaching
  • Teaching and learning collocation
  • Developing vocabulary learning strategies
  • Assessing vocabulary
  • Online resources for vocabulary exploration and vocabulary practice

Teaching Style

The Expanding Learners’ Vocabulary course combines course input from ATC’s trainers with group discussion and collaborative work. Teachers are encouraged to share ideas and experiences, and are given the opportunity to collaborate on different types of tasks in order to create their own resources and put the theory into practice. Teachers should finish the course with a portfolio of materials and lesson ideas that can be used in their teaching context, or for the purposes of training other teachers.

ATC’s Expanding Learners’ Vocabulary course can be combined with another Teacher Training & Development course, or a General English course, to form a 2-week programme. Please contact us for details.

Certificated hours
