Course content
This course synthesises three powerful pedagogical models: Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), Project-Based Learning (PBL), and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
Education for Sustainable Development is a core element of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a global plan of action focused on people, planet, and prosperity, adopted by the UN in 2015. UNESCO considers the ESD a primary driver for achieving all 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
The core objective of our CLIL for Sustainable Development course is to equip language teachers with the skills and confidence to effectively integrate ESD into their language curricula, and create learning experiences that are not only effective for second language learning but also transformative for students. The SDGs offer teachers a powerful framework for Content and Language Integrated Learning, where Content (ESD) and Language are integrated into an engaging and motivating learning programme for upper primary and secondary level students, or young adults. A CLIL approach aligns well with the SDGs’ holistic and interdisciplinary nature, offering a rich authentic context for language learning, preparing students for the complex challenges of the 21st century. Using a Project-Based Learning methodology for implementing a CLIL-SDG module, teachers will design a PBL unit aligned with specific SDGs and their existing language curriculum standards. Course Modules Include: Teaching Style The CLIL for Sustainable Development course combines course input from ATC’s CLIL trainers with group discussion and collaborative work. Teachers are encouraged to share ideas and experiences, and are given the opportunity to collaborate on tasks in order to create their own resources and put the theory into practice. Certificated hours At the end of the course, teachers will receive an ATC Language Schools’ Certificate of Attendance for the 30 hour CLIL for Sustainable Development. Teachers who complete the CLIL for Sustainable Development course may elect to join another programme in the future. The 1 week course can be combined with a General English course, to form a 2-week programme. Please contact us for details. For teachers applying through the Erasmus Plus scheme the OID for ATC Language Schools is E10365795.
