clil for primary teachers…

The aim of this programme is to help teachers plan and deliver CLIL lessons with confidence.

Practical CLIL is a hands-on teacher training course for primary, secondary and vocational teachers who teach their subject, or are preparing to teach it, through English. Participants explore the ideas behind Content and Language Integrated Learning and learn how to identify the language demands of their own subject, adapt authentic materials, and design supportive speaking and writing tasks.

Each day combines shared input with workshops in sector groups, so teachers apply every technique to their own learners and context. Throughout the week they build a complete CLIL lesson plan, with adapted materials, scaffolded tasks and an assessment tool, ready to use in class and to share with colleagues.

Applicants must have minimum level of B1 level of English, as outlined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. If you would like to confirm your level, please contact us.

ATC’s 1 week CLIL for Primary Teachers course can be combined with another 1 week Teacher Training and Development course or a General English course, to form a 2-week programme, contact us for details.

For teachers applying through the Erasmus Plus scheme the OID for ATC Language Schools is E10365795.

Student Reviews

The course was very interesting and comprehensive. I have already implemented some of the things learnt in this course. I highly recommend it.
Thank you!

Our teachers’ and students’ feedback about the course was enthusiastic and we owe this great result to the high professionalism of the teacher trainers from ATC and the perfect organisation of the course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants should be better able to:

  • Explain the core principles of CLIL, including the 4Cs and hard and soft CLIL, and place their own teaching context within them.
  • Identify the language demands of a lesson or unit in their own subject, including subject vocabulary, functional language and classroom language.
  • Adapt authentic subject materials so that learners at different levels of English can access the content.
  • Design scaffolded tasks that get learners speaking and writing about subject content in English.
  • Choose assessment and feedback methods that separate content knowledge from language ability.
  • Plan and present a CLIL lesson for their own learners, and give constructive feedback on a colleague’s lesson plan.
  • Share CLIL practice with colleagues in their own school or college.

Course content

The Practical CLIL: Teaching Subjects through English course gives primary, secondary and vocational teachers the understanding, language and practical tools they need to teach their subject through English with confidence. It is built around the skills every CLIL teacher needs rather than around a single subject, so participants work with their own curriculum, learners and materials throughout the week.

Across five days of input sessions, workshops and project work, participants explore how to make subject content accessible in English, how to support learners to speak and write about that content, and how to assess content and language fairly. Each day starts with a core session for the whole group, followed by a workshop in sector groups (primary, secondary and vocational), where trainers show how the same technique changes for different ages and settings.

Key themes include:

  • The core concepts of CLIL: the 4Cs, hard and soft CLIL, and how CLIL fits your own teaching context
  • Language in CLIL: identifying the language demands of your subject, and using classroom language and teacher talk effectively
  • Working with CLIL materials: choosing and adapting authentic texts, video and audio, and using AI tools to level and adapt resources
  • Supporting speaking and writing: scaffolding learner output with frames, models and well-designed tasks
  • Assessment and planning in CLIL: assessing content and language separately, giving useful feedback, and writing a CLIL lesson plan

The course blends theory with practice. Participants experience a CLIL lesson as learners, analyse a text from their own subject for its language demands, adapt an authentic resource, and try out scaffolded speaking and writing tasks in short micro-teaching sessions with peer feedback. Examples come from primary, secondary and vocational classrooms, so teachers see the techniques working across a wide range of subjects and ages.

The sector workshops are a key feature of the week. Primary teachers focus on routines, visual and hands-on support, and classroom language for young learners. Secondary teachers focus on academic language, subject genres and exam demands. Vocational teachers focus on workplace language, manuals and procedures, and work-based learning. On some days the groups mix, so participants can see how a technique adapts from one sector to another.

Throughout the week, participants use their project hours to build a complete CLIL lesson plan for their own learners. By the end they have a language support sheet for their subject, an adapted resource, scaffolded speaking and writing tasks and an assessment tool, which they present to the group for structured peer feedback. They also leave with a short plan for sharing CLIL practice with colleagues at home, which can be used for Erasmus+ dissemination.

By the end of the course, participants will have a clear understanding of how to integrate content and language, practical techniques they can use in their next lesson, and a lesson plan and set of resources they can adapt and share.

The 1 week course can be combined with a General English course, to form a 2-week programme. Please contact us for details.
