Student Reviews
The course was very interesting and comprehensive. I have already implemented some of the things learnt in this course. I highly recommend it.
Thank you!
Our teachers’ and students’ feedback about the course was enthusiastic and we owe this great result to the high professionalism of the teacher trainers from ATC and the perfect organisation of the course.
Course content
This course was developed as an introduction to the content and language integrated approach to education.
The course looks at the main features that characterise the CLIL methodology and explores different approaches to CLIL, from subject-led ‘hard CLIL’ (where there is a strong focus on subject knowledge), to language-led ‘soft CLIL’ (where curricular topics are taught during a language course). As a result, the course has broad appeal and is suitable for subject teachers and language teachers who want to know more about this exciting methodology.
Teachers will examine the role of language in CLIL and explore both general academic (cross-curricular) and subject-specific language. We will look at ideas for helping students to notice key language in their texts and to support them in the use of this language in their speaking and writing. We will also look at techniques and activities for helping students to read subject texts and listen to presentations on subject topics, through the language of instruction. We will look at different resources available for CLIL teachers and consider approaches to amending and adapting materials for CLIL practice. Finally, the course will look at assessment in CLIL and help teachers think about how they might approach formative and summative assessment of their students’ learning. Course Modules: Teaching Style The Introduction to CLIL course combines course input from ATC’s CLIL trainers with group discussion and collaborative work. Teachers are encouraged to share ideas and experiences, and are given the opportunity to collaborate on tasks in order to create their own resources and put the theory into practice. Certificated hours At the end of the course, teachers will receive an ATC Language Schools’ Certificate of Attendance for the 30 or 60 hour CLIL: Introduction to Content and Language Integrated Learning programme. Teachers who complete the Introduction to CLIL course may elect to join another programme in the future, such as the CLIL Plus Programme. This programme offers subject-specific CLIL training, delving a little deeper into the text types, and the specific language demands of individual subjects. It also provides subject teachers with the opportunity to join an international community of practice of other CLIL teachers working in their subject area. The CLIL Plus Programme offers courses in CLIL for Geography Teachers, CLIL for History Teachers, and CLIL for Art Teachers. The 1 week course can be combined with a General English course, to form a 2-week programme. Please contact us for details. For teachers applying through the Erasmus Plus scheme the OID for ATC Language Schools is E10365795.
